Recovering the Hope of Children This was written by a guy who is in Iraq. He explains what is going on there and it wasn't very good news. He said that all the old people have lost hope, but all the children still have it. He then says that he wants to make the children stay happy, so they can live a better life. I agree with him that you need to make the generation below you to have a better life. Derek T R3
The main idea is about never giving up and if you work hard enough at something it will pay off in the long run.
-Samantha has work so hard in practice and in the off season to make it on the varsity team. It pays off in the games when students come to the games with their face painted and in the end they won State and Federation Class B Championship. When I go to college I really want to play basketball and see the student section in all one color and with their face painted cheering us on. It would just be icing on the cake if we won a championship.
The Power of hello. The essay was about the important of acknowledgement, showing that you now someone is there is even in a small way. My Grandma told me the same thing, and I agree with what the writer of this essay was saying.
I read the Essay about pickup basketball. The essay was very good with many different figurative language. The article was about how everyone can play a game of basketball. It doesn't matter what race you are, how smart you are, or how tall you are. Anyone can get a pair of sneakers on and play.
Brighton Earley was ashamed of her family's new shopping habits. Her mother had maxed out every credit card she owned, forcing them to come to terms with her mistakes. The consequence was to shop at Cheveron, a gas station, for the weekly supply of groceries. Brighton was devastated at first, but putting the pieces together one by one, she accepted her new ways because it doesn't matter if your family has different traditions they follow.
This story made me put my critical thinking into gear, because I've come across this situation all year. It's hard to convince people that no matter what you do, we're all the same. It doesn't matter if you shop at a gas station or Whole Foods, it makes no difference as to who you are.
The essay i read was about a patent that loves their 2 kids a lot and who works with troubled kids for a job. They tell about how the kids got to be the way they are today. Something tragic or Devastating happened to them at some point that changed them. How they see parents walk into court ready to be taken away from their children permanently.
I think this story is pretty sad because of all the kids that changed from something that happened to them at some point in their life. They talk about parents trying so hard to get them to change to be better but it doesn't happen sometimes. I can tell the person who wrote the essay loves their kids a lot because they talked about them a lot and how they are always laughing and being told they're loved.
This girls family and her dog would drive up state from Manhattan, they could never agree on any music except the one song "Yellow Submarine" by The Beatles. One day her dog Phoebe ran away, they put up fliers and call into the woods but no dog. One day her dad hops into the car and drives off, half hour later he's driving down the road with The Beatles blasting. Her mom had thought he had lost his mind. He figure all those times she was in the car with us she heard the Beatles, he said she would come when she heard the music. She did come a few days later but that was because a neighbor saw the caller and call the number. her dad died a few months after this. she believes even though the Beatles are no more their music lives on in every one.
I feel that she is right though they may be gone they leave a story in every one and their inspiration is still there. I also think the same could apply to her dad though she didn't say this, her dad may be gone but his goofy trick to find phoebe will always be there.
"In my search to reconcile my roots, my outlaw trail led me to know that sometimes it takes going to the margins of life to find a center." This was one of those essays that really hit me. She was born into a heroin addicted family and grew up in foster homes. Eventually she decided that she can do better than that. After spending a very long part of her life messing up over and over and not really caring she found herself. It took her years of destroying herself, body, mind, criminal record and family life for her to see that she could do better than all that. This one really hit me because my best friend is in jail right now, who is a heroin addict as well. It's taken him a long time to see what he'd done to himself, but he's finally starting to notice what was happening and he's even apologized to some of the people he's hurt. I agree 100% that people can change, and that sometimes you have to mess up to end up ok in the end. =]
The essay I read was written by Brian Eno, in London. He believes that singing is the key to a good, long life. It is good for you, like exercising your lungs. Also, it benefits you psychologically, because you use so many feelings. Then he goes on to describe general aspects of music, like rhythm and tone.
I connected and understood what he was talking about, because I am a musician (not a singer, but a musician nonetheless). I really knew what he was talking about the whole time.
I have chosen the essay "Music is The Story of My Life"
In this essay Jonathan talks about how music can help a person or bring a person down. He mentions how music get's rid of his stress. He talks about how music is the art that he uses all the time, and he uses it to get over the things he does not like that is going on in his life.
This essay stood out to me because I feel like I can relate. Music is a big part of my life.
This essay is about how music can change your mood. In this one he was with hes friends, he had a bad night and was cold. During his car ride home "Blinded by the Light" came on and from being grumpy his mood went to happy. This song brought up a embarrassing memory about his past. His mom was giving him a ride home when the song came on and his mom started singing it really loud. After the chorus she turned around and asked, "does it say, 'Revved up like a deuce in the middle of the night' or 'revved up like a douche in the middle of the night.-I thought this was funny and I have memories of my brother doing embarrassing stuff during songs.
Ivory works at a small diner in Texas. She believes that everyone is here in the world to take care of each other. I completely agree with her. Peace happens with little steps. It only takes one person to make a huge change. For Ivory, just making eye contact, asking the customers how they're doing, and listening to them is all it takes. ~Aleina
This whole essay was about the belief that one should experience compassion and take action in selfless services. With this, it makes us human. One more the most important things that we do in our brief time is to serve others. It's to help our neighbors and people in their times of adversity and our reward is the joy and good fortune when adversity is overcome.
I believe in this also. If everyone took some of their time to help others in need just for the good of it, the world would be a better place. The greatest fulfillment is when you come to the aid of others. Your own self also has to overcome adversity and if someone were there to aid you, it would become a big continuous cycle of selfless deeds.
I did addiction. The article was called There Is No Blame, Only Love. At the beginning the mother of the child looked for someone to blame, Katie, the daughter, her friends, divorce, her dad, and herself. Katie eventually went to rehab and came home. The mother monitored Katie and drove her to therapy, A.A meetings and didn't let anything slip by. Katie left, still addicted. The mother changed her beliefs about why Katie was addicted to drugs. She eventually had hope, and love. She now just loves Katie, with no blame. They now meet for coffee, and the mother didn't blame, she loved, and Katie responded well. She is now in rehab.
I agree with the mother somewhat, that it is right to love a child and cherish her, but there is a reason for why she is doing drugs and had been for so long and I believe that she needs help for those problems, not the actual addictions. Olivia Hamlin
A girl is graduating in May but she had a very rough path to get it. At the age of 14 she was addicted to cocaine and drank all the time. Then at fifteen she got into cigarettes and quit school. Thankfully her family got her back on the road to recovery.
I think it is outrageous how this girl was 14 and doing cocaine. I am very she has a loving family that was willing to help back to normal.
That Old Piece of Cloth: By Frank Miller. Frank grew up with teachers that were ex-hippies. His parents were both World World War II veterans. He was a comic book writer and was someone who drew the villains. One day he saw the real thing though on 9/11. He had to go through seeing his friends, and family. This article made me wonder what it was like if I had to go through 9/11 and losing my friends and family die.
Theme: pets and animals In this essay, it was about a dog named Fu Man Chu. It talked about how Fu Man Chu is better than facebook, texting, and television. Also how Fu Man Chu helps the writer get more fit. "His affection back is not the result of clever programming." This made me think about my dog, and how I haven't been giving him as much of attention I normally do, and it made me sad. When I get home, I'm defiantly giving my dog so much attention, it just seems with going to school, projects, and homework I never really have time to do anything else.
Theme: Race Essay: A Duty to Heal Summary: A black doctor had a patient who was a white supremacist, with a swastika tattooed onto his chest. The patient had been in a car crash and was coughing up blood. When the doctor went to help the patient, he wouldn't let the doctor touch him, but only the white nurses. Even though the patient ended up being fine, the doctor thought, what could I have done to make this better?
In response to the doctor's question, I don't really think he could have done anything about it. The white patient was just racist, and there's nothing he could have done to make him be nice to him. It's not even a personal thing, he just dislikes any race that isn't white, so he shouldn't think much of the patient.
The essay I read, "Combating the Tyranny of the Positive Attitude" by Barbara Held. It's about Barbara's experience with being in a rough spot and trying as hard as she could to act happy but all that did was increase her distress. So when she decided to just let herself be glum she started to actually recover. Although some people can recover while being positive, the point is to just be yourself to start recovering at your own pace. I partially agree because if you just keep everything inside and you never express your feelings then you actually never get over it. It's all bottled up inside and can eventually cause you to explode. The only reason I don't fully agree is because if it's something that really shouldn't be worth getting upset over, then a positive attitude can actually just help you feel happy.
Theme: self-determination Essay: Being Content with Myself by Kamaal Majeed
The essay was about Kamaal Majeed and how people stereotype him as one of the black people you see on the news that have done bad things or a rapper. He had to deal with people saying that he is not a real African-American because he doesn't wear this, or doesn't listen to this, or because he's smart. Majeed does not like these stereotype get to him because he knows that these are not what define a person. What defines a person is the way they act and the actions that they do.
I agree without Majeed is trying to say, be your own person. You don't have to be this kind of person or that kind of person just because someone tells you to. You act the way that you want to act, be yourself and not worry about what people think of you. You'll always find a group of friends who accept you for who your are and not what they think you should be.
The theme I chose was Addiction and it was about a girl whose father was an alcoholic. She told about how her and her mom and her sister had to leave sometimes and stay with her aunt when her father wasn't sober. Her father would act like a terrible parent and husband, verbally abuse his family, and just act totally out of line, but there were times when he'd come home with flowers for his wife, and take his daughters fishing. The girl respected him no matter what, because she knows that no human deserves to be treated like that, even someone who treats other people like that. This essay really hit me that things are so much worse at other places, and I should be grateful I don't have to be around things or people like that. It teaches me that I should treat everyone nicely, because we're all human. Even if someone treats other people badly, that's no excuse to treat other people badly
Theme- Sports Article- Ath(l)e(tic)ism? It's about how this person based there life around sports were many base there lives about religion. This is very interesting to me because I do the same thing. I have never been to church before but every weekend I have sports games. My life like the person in the story is based around sports.
This essay is about how a woman overcame the fear of being raped by her neighbor and thought she had a good chance dieing in the process. She didn't want to die full of fear so she started to speak from her heart. This confused her rapist entirely and they talked about many things including how he knew that she didn't want him to do this. They also talked about how she wanted to see her children again. She literally walked away from her attacker and the last thong he said was "go find you babies." Her core belief is compassionate love is the antidote to fear. I agree with completely
Basically there was high tension in Steve's high school, between white people and black people. As Steve was trying to hit on some girl, he was approached by a group of black kids. They were assuming that he would be prejudiced towards them, but Steve was just trying to mind his own business. Then some kid just violently kicks him, and it just gets worse from there. He gets violently mutilated by the kids and he's bleeding. Then, some kid named Sheldon actually helped him, Steve didn't look at his face but his skin color and Sheldon was black. The point of the story was that people shouldn't just assume and have prejudice ideals in their mind, because not everyone is the same.
The sister Hood of Roller Derby was about a girl that was starting roller derby's and she didn't think she would fit in and she trained for three mounts then she was finally ready to play a real game. I didn't really know what roller derby was and now I do its a pretty rough sport and it is probably hard to play.
Nancy Yucius - Avon, Massachusetts A woman's mother told her to always live her life with no regrets. She was inspired by the way her mother lived her life and she wanted to follow in her footsteps. She was diagnosed with colon cancer and told herself it wasn't going to bring her down. She had several rounds of chemo and radiation so, it was hard for her to push through and do the things she enjoyed. So, on her good days she filled them with laughter, friends, trips, family and fun. She just kept living her life and kept thinking of the quote her mother wrote to her, to get her through the days. She just got back from a 5 week trip overseas and is still standing strong.
It's amazing to have an inspiration like that and having a positive attitude about it. You know that a person is determined, if they get news like that and can handle it so positively. This story inspired me to live my life without regrets. I already have regrets and I'm only 14. But, who lives in the past? I'm going to focus on what's ahead of me and try my hardest. This story is very inspiring and I'm going to think of that quote all the time, to help me get through.
The essay I read, "The People Who Love You When No One Else Will," by Cecile Gilmer. Tells her story of her best friends family taking her in and helping her grow and become who she is today. They took care of her when she was 15-22. The reason she no longer lived with her parents was because her mom had shot herself and her step mom had kicked them out. She couldn't stay with her dad because he wasn't able to take care of her by himself because he always was depending on other people. She says she is "very thankful" for the Beaches opening up their home for her or else she would be a "very bitter woman"
i read an essay about a white woman with a child mixed with all races, to the mother her child was the most beautiful thing in the world. In the article she talks about how she never had time to think about her belifs before her daughter. people didnt belive that she was he daughter because of how she looked
Ann Karasinski - Belmont, Michigan This essay was about having a heroin addict for a daughter. The mother questions how this happened, considering she is a reflection of her daughter and influences her. She begins to blame it on herself, and on her earlier divorce. She then finally realizes that it isn't her fault, it's no one's fault. I try to imagine how it must feel to raise a child and watch it grow, and have hopes and dreams for it and then have it be crushed by a simple drug. I would feel awful. Lia B. R4
"Taking the Bus" Chesley - Orlando, Florida It's about a girl taking the bus against her parents wishes, and meeting a lot of interesting people. She met people of different races, religions, and general backgrounds, and they all shared a part of their life with her. She made the point that she would have never met people like that any other way. I agree that taking the bus must let you meet interesting people. I would like to have an experience like that because I feel that I am somewhat isolated from meeting new people in my life right now. -Maddie R3
The essay I read was say thanks to my ghosts. It was about this woman that could talk to her dead grandmother. When she was 14 her brother died with a brain tumor and 6 months later her father also died from a brain tumor. Her mother told her to talk to them but she couldn't. When her mother died she saw her as if it were a hologram but her face was a lot larger than normal. This was 24 hours after her death.
I have heard of people talking to ghosts on T.V, but i didn't think it was for real.
I read about a guy who has tourette's and he talks about wanting to be normal. He passes TS down to his son and seeing his son have it, lets him feel free because watching how his son handles it makes him feel normal.
I think this really spoke to me because it said stuff like how he wanted to be normal but couldn't because he was always twitching. He used to get made fun of and bullied because of it but once he saw his son, it made him feel free.
"Paying Attention To The Silver Lining" By: Annaliese Jakimides This essay was about a woman who's son commits suicide when he was 21. She was than greatful for everything that happened including her son doing suicide. She thinks she can see clearly all the easy things in life and ignores all the regretful things. She opened up to be a friendly happy person instead of being a depressed burden on her family. She meets strangers and makes friends and is happy she is still living her life to the fullest. She literally walked away from her attacker and the last thong he said was

Her core belief is compassionate love is the antidote to fear. I agree with completely

ReplyDeleteSteve - Sugar Land, Texas

ReplyDeleteA woman's mother told her to always live her life with no regrets.

ReplyDeleteThis essay was about having a heroin addict for a daughter.

"Taking the Bus" Chesley - Orlando, Florida
ReplyDeleteIt's about a girl taking the bus against her parents wishes, and meeting a lot of interesting people.

ReplyDeleteI have heard of people talking to ghosts on T.V, but i didn't think it was for real.

I read about a guy who has tourette's and he talks about wanting to be normal. He passes TS down to his son and seeing his son have it, lets him feel free because watching how his son handles it makes him feel normal.
ReplyDeleteI think this really spoke to me because it said stuff like how he wanted to be normal but couldn't because he was always twitching. He used to get made fun of and bullied because of it but once he saw his son, it made him feel free.
