  1. It relates to Children of the River because Mahad tells how his family adapted to culture in different places, like Sundara's family has to do in America.

  3. While Sundara left Cambodia during a raid of the area around her and her family, Mahad left after a short violent raid on his own home.

  4. The Table relates to "Children of the River" in many ways, one way is how the "rebels" as they are called in The Table come in with no warning and do anything they want. Also Mahad had to leave her country behind to get away with no warning, and her mother and sister both were trapped in the war and she didn't see them for a long time.

  5. I felt sadden by this story because rebels came into her home, without notice and took all their valuables. That's just something you'd never expect when you're just sitting at home eating with your family, and it's just cruel. But some things I found interesting is the adapation they had to a different culture in Egypt. It was more modern but they got used to it, they even had all of the necessary modern day items such as a television. It was also sad because the entire family was struggiling to find ways of making money. What was even worse is that their mother had to be on the run for 7 years before she got to meet up with her family. Being separated from you children is just devastating because you don't know what'll happen. But in the end, I'm just glad they were able to find safety.

  6. In the beginning when her home is invaded, right off it reminded me of the holocaust. When I read about her mother and brother got seperated from her and the rest of the family, it reminded me of Sundara not being with her parents and brothers. Also, since she came to America, it reminded me of "Children of the River" and "Funny in Farsi" because they both came to America.

  7. I found it horrifying that the "rebels" took over their home, and that he saw his father bleeding from his head, and his family surrounded. It must of been hard for him to leave, and lose his mother and brother.

  8. In children of the river family is a very important part of life and I can tell that family is also very imprtant to the somalian people. For example when the somali family moved to Cairo they never ate dinner together but when they moved to Portland they started eating together again.

  9. It relates to children of the river in certain ways because this person had to leave her mother and move to egypt, and in children of the river, Sundara had to leave her parents to get out of Cambodia. Also they are both kinda alike because they both go from having not a lot to more then they had then from where they both came from (Sundara and Mahad)

  10. I found this essay very interesting it really relates to children of the river how thye were ran out of their country and how they lived in america trying to survive with their dad as a mechanic and himself being the oldest child. I also understood their hardship dealing with modern day life from their past life it is unfair how they lose family and stick with a smaller family in america

  11. Mahad Hilowle seems to be having a rough time. He is robbed while his mother and borther are away, and they flee to their Uncle's so they can head to Egypt and get away. They soon end up in Cairo. They left in such a hurry that they left his mother and brother there. He is only plagued by rotten luck here too, with his father working many long hours, and they lived in a rough neighborhood. I can't make too many connections to either story because "Children of the River"is a darker tone, with the need for leave Genocide. "Funny in farsi" has a happier tone to it and they don't seem to run into trouble.

  12. I feel like this is related to Children of the River because it says how she lost parts of her family, and that's just like Sundara, she lost he family too, which relates to this essay. It tells my personal being that my life isn't as hard as others. They suffer so much more then we American kids do.

  13. My thoughts on "The Table" by Mahad Hilowle is that it sort of relates to "Children of the River". In "The Table" the person had to leave their mother and their little brother in Somalia while the rest of the family left for their own safety. In "Children of the River" Sundara was forced to leave her mother, father, and other loved ones in Cambodia while she went off to America because it was the safest thing to do.

  14. "The Table" relates to "Children of the River" because in "The Table" there was a civil war happening. Rebels came to Mahad Home and took anything of value and in "Children of the River" Rebels Call the Khmer Rouge Came to Sundara's aunt house and took everything and killed people. They both relate to each other because no matter there can be a war. There can people who want to rebel for no reason and take everything away from you. Making you and your family start a new life, by starting with nothing, moving to a new place and meeting new people. That's why "The Table" and "Children of the River" relate to each other.

  15. This was a sad and frightening way to be forced out of your country. This relates to Children of the River because Sundara and her aunt and uncle had to flee Cambodia due to the Khmer Rouge, leaving behind Sundara's father, mother and siblings. In the essay, Mahad, fled Somalia because of the Civil War happening there and his home being robbed leaving his father injured and leaving his mother and brother. Both Sundara and Mahad had to deal with the differences between the clashes of culture after.

  16. Well I think that how the girl house was broken into and all there valubles were stolen and how they fled to another country to escape. Her mom and brother could not go because they were missing in simolia. I think that it relates to Children Of The River.

  17. It's really sad how many people had to come to America and change their life forever with no warning. Mahad's story reminds me of "Children of the River," how Sandara's family had to leave Cambodia and had to adjust to the different culture. Also how everyone in the family did whatever they could in contribution to the household needs. Sandara had to leave her mother and father and brothers and sisters behind, not knowing their whether or not she would ever see them again; like how Mahad had to leave members of her family behind as well.

  18. this relates a lot to children of the river because it is just about the same situation but just in different places in the world. they left because of war and hardships in somalia. They had to adjust to a new place which is very similar to the book.

  19. I felt an unexplainable sadness occur over me while reading this. Just imagine your home, your birthplace, and your life being invaded, forcing you to start a new life in unfamiliar territory. This relates to Children of the river because Sundara was forced out of her country and was forced to start a new life in a new world. Times like those are when kids like Sundara are forced to grow up mentally before they are supposed to.

  20. "The Table" relates to "Children of the River" in a couple of ways. One way is that Sundara leaves her home because it is going to be attacked and Mahad leaves his home because it was attacked. Also, they relate because they both had to try and fit into the culture of the city they moved into. Those are a few of the ways "The Table" relates to "Children of the River".

  21. This reminds me of a lot of the books we have been reading lately. About how you adapt when you come to a new place. Im starting to notice that it is impossible to keep your own cultural ways in a new place. You have to do whats normal because you are trying to fit in.

  22. Mahad's story relates to "Children of the River" because it is about another refugee family trying to adapt to a new culture. Mahad, like Sundara, left part of his family back in Somalia, but they reunited. Both families were also forced out of their homes due to violence in their countries. Like many other refugees, both families had to adjust their ways of life to fit into a new culture.

  23. as some people have said it is like children of the river but the story here is a little harder to follow because it jumps all over the place. The way it starts out is different from children from the river

  24. This relates to Children of the River because they were basically forced out of their home, just like Sundara was. They had to leave part of their family behind as well, and that's not fair at all. It's really sad how they had to leave their own country for something they can't even help.

  25. I think this really relates to "Children of the River" in many ways. Like Sundara and her family in "Children of the River" Mahad and his family were split up because of their country's struggles. luckily Mahad was able to reunite his family and I think through all of this they may have grown much closer.

  26. Mahad Hilowle had to leave his mother and sister behind when he came to America and wasn't sure what happened to them. In Children of the River Sundara had to leave her family behind when she came to America with her aunt and uncle and she doesn't know what happen to them. Mahad though, has now reconnected with them but Sundara still doesn't now what happened to her family.

  27. This passage makes me realize how lucky I am to live in a place where this sort of violence doesn't happen to me like it does in Somalia and other places in the world. After reading this, I feel very bad for Mahad and his family because they have a tough decision to make. Either live in fear of raiders or move to a safer place.

  28. This story relates to Children of the river because in both stories they had to leave some of their family members behind to save their own lives. Also in both stories they have a lot of siblings and family is very important to both Characters.

  29. It relates to "Children of The River" because some of there family is in Portland and some is still in the country they use to live in trying to get out. One thing that stuck out to me was that they just go out of there house and left without the mom and brother I think they should have waited for them then went to Cairo.

  30. Being forced to flee your home must be so hard, but leaving your mother and brother behind would be ever harder. I don't know if this is true for all the people who immigrate to America, but it seems like a lot have quite the journey on the way.

  31. Its really disturbing to know that he had to witness something like that, but it relates a lot to "Children of the River" because when Sundara left she had to leave not knowing where the rest of her family & friends were.

  32. The essay shows how tough times were in Somalia. Losing family must be really hard. It seems that America is the place of freedom for them, everyone's main goal is to travel here and live the dream. This story shows that many people DID survive. They suffered, but they picked their life back up again, just somewhere different. "Children of the River" is very similar, because they both had hardships that pushed them out of their country, but the same goals. They made the best of the situation, even though the culture is so much different.

  33. What stood out to me was that in this reading Mahad lost her mom and brother while they were fleeing. IN Children of the River she loses her mom brother and sister while fleeing.
