  1. It must be terrifying going place to place, and having to deal without special family members, like a brother or mother, to be beside you. Knowing the peril they could be in every moment, and that their lives are being held by a thread.

Yet, when things come back together, it must feel like the wait is worthwhile. I guess Mahad now knows
how much having his full family together means to him.

  2. I cannot believe that people don't even think about what their actions will do to others or the lack of caring. There rebels broke a family apart and gave these people a horrible memory that will stay with them forever. I am glad though that the family got back together and they are now okay. -Kim Dodd

  3. I thought it was interesting how after everyone's name, they would say what it meant in their language.

  4. I really appreciate this story, because it has a happy ending. Their whole family is together, and are successful in America. While they have adjusted to some aspects of American culture, such as eating around a table, but kept aspects of their own culture, such as the name meanings and respecting elders more. This shows an ideal transition in to American culture for me, there was no loss of life and they are happy in America.

  5. I sounds funny but many cultures sit on the floor and eat everyday but the that really hit me is that she saw her father all bloody and that corrupted her for sure and if that didn't then losing her mother and sister for four years definitely changed her life drastically. I know these things would be true for me.

  6. The Table is really sad to here about how people don't have good houses or a nice place to live. Also how his dad couldn't get a job and stuff.

  7. I think that it was very depressing how the rebels just came into their house killing part of her family. It was also terrible how they took everything they had.

  8. I like this story because it ends happily, like Emma said. I feel hopeful for the girl because she is on her way to having a better life; I also feel bad because she had to go through things like seeing her father beaten and bleeding, that would be a horrible thing to see.

  10. I think this is a good story because the family went through a lot and have a good life now here in America incorporating our culture: sitting at a table and eating and drinking American foods, and their culture: respecting elders.

I like how they included what their names meant in their language.

I don't understand how people can do things that bring misfortune to people without thinking, like the rebels who broke into their house. They created a negative memory for this family without caring, to steal from them. It's good that the family got back together and they are now okay.

  11. It's sad how their family lost some of their customs, like how now they all sit at a table, but before they used to sit on the floor. I really like how some of the name's meanings corresponded with the persons role/personality. For example, Fadumo means "mother of nature", and she is the mother. Also, Said's name means "helpful", and he is always trying to find a job to help with his family.

  12. I thought it was a good story because the family came to America and is now living a good life and including our culture into their previous culture and life style. They went through so much, its great that they have the oppurtunity to be somewhere else. I enjoyed reading about how most of the names meanings connected with a persons personality or standing. Like how Saids name meant helpful, and that makes sense because of everything he does for the family and how he puts in the major effort to find a job. As sad as this story was, it had a happy ending for once so you must look at the positives and leave behind the negatives. --- Katie Randall

  13. I can't imagine not knowing where my family is, weither they're dead or alive for seven years. I don't know how Mahad made it through. Also, I thought it was horrible that he came downstairs to find his father bleeding from the head, and the rest of his family surrounded by large men. I don't know what I would do in that situation.

  14. This story is very sad. Not knowing how your family is doing or where they are is scary. I feel like this family was in many very bad situations and I feel very bad for them. Mahad is very lucky to be alive.

  15. I thought this was a sad and sweet little story. The beginning wasn't the most pleasureful thing to read, but towards the end, the sadness lightened. I'm happy, the story ended happily, with the family eating as the Americans do, safe from the civil war in their home country. I can't make my mind think as to what it would be like in that kind of position. Reading these kind of stories make me feel grateful for the things I have.

  16. I can't believe that Mahad was able to go through all of that, walking downstairs and seeing his own father all bloody, and strangers with guns surrounding the rest of his family. Such a sad story about how they had to flee... But luckily, they were all able to be together in the end.

  17. This story symbolizes independence, and bravery. The boy was so young and was faced with so many tragedies at a young age. I could never get through my life knowing that some of my family members were nowhere near me, and not knowing whether they are alive or not. That feeling of not knowing must be terrible. When they were in their house and were attacked by those men, that must have been a very frightening scenario. The horror that went through his body was probably unexplainable. He is a very brave, and fate brought him here to a safe place, and was blessed enough to reunite with his family. And, they finally have a table in which they can all sit together. -Michelle Foster
