What is Justice?

1. If you have not already done so, please go to this link and read the article on What is Justice for a sixth grader. After the article, copy and paste one line from the reading, comment on it, then post it on this blog.

2. Please listen or read this article on juvenile justice and life in prison. Write down three key points that you will then share in class.

Please go to this link to review your parts of speech. You will have a short check in quiz on Friday.

  1. "I don't care how old they are; if they kill somebody, they ought to die." I think this is a little harsh but I do agree with it a little bit. I don't think that the person should die if they are 5 years old but they certainly should not be let out of jail because they could just keep on killing. How do you know if they will or not? If you were 13 instead of 5 killing people then you would only go to jail for 5 years instead of 13 years if you were 5. Now you might remember more of what happened at the age of 13 then if you were 5, so you would be more likely to kill again. Five year olds wouldn't remember as much if they were to kill at 13.

  2. "I don't care how old they are; if they kill somebody, they ought to die. I don't care if they're five years old. The Bible says an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. They need to change the law."I don't think that this is true, I don't think the kids deserve to die, it is really harsh, and they aren't even that old, but they should be punished, but not so harsh that they have to die. I think the eye for an eye thing, shouldn't be used in this century, because it is unfair. I don't think it's fair also, that someone called the Grandmother, I think it was really rude, and uncalled for.

  3. "Their age has nothing to do with the fact that they murdered my wife and four others. Kids do things on the spur of the moment. What these boys did was not a spur of the moment thing." It doesn't matter how old you are, or if something was wrong with you. If you did the wrong thing you should get punishment for it. - Yevonna

They need to change the law." I agree with this statement 100%! It may seem kind of harsh but I am just that type of person who thinks that if a person no matter what age kills someone they should have an equal penalty. I get both of these from "An Eye for An Eye" and Newton's law "Every Action has an Equal and Opposite Reaction." If the person was 4 or 27 or 89 they should get whatever they did done back to them. I also think that the golden rule applies to this in a little sense. No I don't feel bad about saying this or anything I just think that you get what you deserve no matter what age. It all ties back into justice and if the 6th grader had to get the death penalty for killing five people and injuring ten that is what he gets. If we live by this, in my mind it will make that world a way better place because people will eventually realize that if they murder someone they will be killed or if they steal something they should lose a hand or a couple fingers, something to make them realize not to do it!

  5. "I don't care how old they are; if they kill somebody, they ought to die."

I don't think this should happen, because unless you are a terrorist attacking over 20 people, then you should not die. Especially if you're still a child or teenager. I think they should definitely be punished, but not by killing them. I also think that they should not punish the parents, unless the parents had something to do with it.

  6. After reading this article, I think that when you do something bad, you MUST have a punishment. It doesn't matter if someone killed someone at 50 or at 10, they still killed someone. It should not be lightened because of someone's age or state of mind. The people that were the victims have suffered, and the ones who did it shouldn't be given a different/lighter punishment because of their age. Why should the criminal have a choice? The victims certainly don't have a choice of their loss hurting less. There could be a young adult who accidentally killed his friend and a child who killed 5 people for the fun of it, but the young adult who didn't mean to kill someone will get a long time in prison, where the child will be in juvy. Some kids go to juvy for small crimes, and they could be put in a cell with a serial killer! Crazy people belong with other crazy people, not age should belong with age.

They need to change the law." i totally agree with this and i think that the person who said this is 100% correct. That is not okay and just cause they are kids doesn't mean that they should be treated any different than anyone else, if a adult were to do this they would be in jail for the rest of their life or get the death penalty. Its should be the same for everyone!!!

  8. "-- I hope your boy gets raped in jail and killed." The words, angry and exasperated, from an anonymous caller, burn into the ears of Jackie Golden, grandmother of Andrew Golden. " whoever this random person is, why call the grandmother? yeah is statement is harsh, but who randomly calls the grandmother, who may not be the legal guardian, and says something that cruel. i just think the person who called was probably the parent of someone who got hurt or killed, is just mad and upset.

They need to change the law." I think that you should have a punishment for what you did but a eye for a eye we are not in the dark ages anymore we are all people who make mistakes and i for one think that he should be punished but why would you want to take another person life also they say that things happen for a reason maybe it was there time i think that they should keep a eye on him til he is old enough than make him pay the for what he did. And theses people who says eye for a eye i beat you they have done something bad to a person but they became the bigger person. They need to stop being CRAZY and act their age.

I dont think they should die necessarily but they should be punished for a long time. Usually kids will fool around, but this is past the extent. Killing people while you're in the 6th grade is not okay. I think those kids should see a doctor because that is not right at all. I agree with the time spent in jail part, but I still think he should face consiquences after that because killing people is not a funny thing to do.

This boy who killed someone should get punished in a different way that will make him suffer and make him think of what he did.I do not think that special treatment of his age is right he should get punished and that's it. He should get locked up go to a person were he will never see sunlight in his life and die there.

  13. "Parental-responsibility law is a gray area" This article shows many different sides of a difficult dilemma, whats fair? On one hand, some children just don't know better, but in this instance it seemed intentional. And in that case sometimes there is a reason involving how little their parents are involved in their life or what kind of childhood they are growing up in. I just don't think it is right to have a law punishing every parent for a child that committed a crime. I think it depends on the situation

  14. "Many are asking: If the law cannot effectively go after the kids, can it not punish the parents?" I think that parents should be responsible for a child's actions. The way that a child is brought up by their parents is how they are going to act when they get older. A person is shaped by their parents, whether it is how much freedom they get or if they are abused. If parents are punished by law for mistreating their children, it would probably help them learn. They should be sent to a "parent responsibility training program". A child always has the choice between right and wrong, but if they are taught correctly by their parents, they will most likely choose the right one.

  15. If the law cannot effectively go after the kids, can it not punish the parents?

i think that this is a reasonable response for an act of such drastic origin. the parents of a child who has murdered another person, should be held responsible for poor firearm control. i do not believe that the parents should be tried for supplying the means for a killing. this is both unfair and would be a needless use of our jails and prisons. these people obviously did not want such a horrible thing to happen, their rights to weapons should be revoked and they should have some sort of punishment. but if anyone should pay the price for their actions, then it should be the shooters themselves.

  16. "It's time for the adults who own the guns to act responsibly, to store them safely and to take responsibility for the guns in their possession."

I think this quote means that as much as it's the kids fault for doing things like killing people it's also the parents fault in some way. If your child is depressed enough to go around shouting people then you should do something about it. It's your child so you should talk to them or talk to the teachers about getting them the help they need. Also you should never keep guns or any short of firearm where a child can get their hands on them because they don't know how to use it, they could hurt themselves along with other people.

  17. "If convicted of killing five and injuring 10, they are likely be out of prison at age 18." I don't think it matters how many they have killed or injured, if its 1 killed and 5 injured or 100 injured and 10 killed they should still be held responsible for there actions and be put in Juvenile prison. -Audreanna Bridges
