Directions:
Through a character's words, thoughts and actions, an author reveals a great deal. Describe an action, thought and use a direct quote from Cole in chapters 1-3. Then use two adjectives to describe Cole based on your observations.
Example
Action: Cole lies to the Circle Justice about wanting to heal.
Thought: Cole thinks that Circle Justice is stupid.
Words: "What's in it for me" (referring to Circle Justice)
Cole is selfish and doesn't trust anyone. He only wants to do Circle Justice to get out of jail and doesn't really try to understand what it is all about. Garvey is trying to help Cole but Cole isn't willing to trust and really listen to what he has to say.

Cole just really wants to leave the island, and how the chapter ended was him swimming out to leave the island. I think he isn't ready to change. He just went to get out of jail.

ReplyDeleteThought: Cole thought that the cabin was just something that his parents and everyone had bought to pretend that they actually cared. He thinks that he would rather die than spend a night in the cabin, playing their stupid game
Words: "This place sucks!" Cole says as he watches the sparks drift upward from the fire.
I think that Cole is impulsive and selfish because many people had put time and energy into helping him and he just burns their efforts away. He doesn't think his decision through and impulsively burns down the cabin and supplies even though that is the only way that he can survive.

Words: "You don't know what its like being hit over and over again, until you're so numb, and you don't feel anything! (referring when Cole admits he gets abused)
Cole is the way he is because of his life at home, his parents drink, and his father abuses him, so now I see why he might have a short fuse, and has issues.

Cole is lonely and sad that his parents don't care for him. Also he is angry with everyone trying to help him because he thinks that they don't care about him.

Thought: Cole thinks that Pete should get beat for ratting him out.
Words: "Your a dead man"(referring that he is gonna beat up Pete)
Cole is violent and brutal. He doesn't want anyone to think they can beat him so he uses violence as his defense. He beat Pete up and down the walkway as many other students watch and realize that Cole has gone out of his mind with brutal force and anger. He thinks that Pete deserved the hospital because Pete gave Cole away.
Action: Cole eats the ingredients to the cake then eats the actual cake

Cole is defiant because he denies everything that would make him look wrong. He was also angry because he knew that Garvey was right.

Cole is a very egoistical and impulsive. He doesn't really think his actions through and tends to try and act tough.

Cole's motto or belief is that the only people he can trust are the ones who are afraid of him. Since Peter ratted him out about Cole robbing the hardware store, he could not be trusted. Cole also always had the idea that he could always get away with stuff. So, when Peter was the first to turn him in; Cole said he had to pay the price. Cole then, cornered Peter and beat him up until he was severely bleeding. Even though Cole got revenge, karma hit him in the face and he was going to be tried as an adult.

Words: "Still, no one ratted on Cole Mathews without paying the price." Cole can't let anything go or just talk to someone, he has to solve everything through violence. But he doesn't get how that doesn't solve anything or make the situation right, it just gets him in trouble. He doesn't listen to anyone and is very non-understanding, or defensive.

I think Cole is just trying to find someone who DOES care but it searching for it the wrong way. In someways maybe he doesn't want to know if anyone actually does care for him and thinks it might be better not knowing. He takes all his abandonment and puts it into anger and takes it out on others to try and erase how he's been treated himself.
Action: COle tries to run away from the island by swimming from island to island.

Cole is dumb for believing he'll make the swim to the mainland, he's in Alaska so the water has to be very cold so he'll have to give u or me might suffer from hypothermia.

Based on my observations Cole is a very angry and mean person. Its horrible how he thinks its funny and laughs when he can see that someone if fearful of him. Also he messed him up pretty badly when he beat him up for telling the cops.
